Role Purpose

To support Torfaen County Borough Council (TCBC) community services by offering time, skills, and enthusiasm to support the delivery of Family History sessions at Blaenavon Library by assisting visitors in exploring their ancestry, using digital and physical library resources, and promoting local heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome and assist visitors attending Family History sessions.
  • Help users navigate family history software such as Ancestry Library Edition and Find My Past.
  • Support individuals in accessing and interpreting local historical records.
  • Collaborate with staff from the library service to provide guidance and encouragement.
  • Maintain a friendly and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Assist in setting up and tidying the space before and after sessions.
  • Follow all Health and Safety and Safeguarding requirements.

Requirements

  • Undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service DBS check (if required)
  • Commitment to uphold Torfaen Council’s values of inclusivity, respect, and community service
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately Reliability and punctuality in attending scheduled sessions
  • Willingness to undertake additional training where required. 

Skills & Experience (Desirable /Essential)

  • Interest in genealogy, local history, or archival research (Essential)
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills (Essential)
  • Basic IT skills, including internet navigation and use of library software (Essential)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team (Essential)
  • Experience using family history tools or conducting personal genealogical research (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of local history in Torfaen or Blaenavon (Desirable)
  • Previous volunteering or community engagement experience (Desirable)
