Mic Morris Memorial Sporting Trust

Mic Morris was a police officer and brilliant British international middle distance runner from Pontypool who died aged just 24 years during a training run in 1983. A trust fund was set up between Gwent Police and Torfaen Borough Council to raise money for Torfaen’s talented young sports people.

Eligibility

It is specifically for young people (aged from 11 up to 21 years) who reside in Torfaen involved in a range of different sports. Those eligible will be placed within three categories:

  1. Represented Wales or Great Britain within the last 12 months and must provide written evidence/proof from their relevant National Governing Body (NGB)
  2. Has been identified to be on a Commonwealth, Elite, International, Olympic pathway with relevant evidence/proof from the appropriate NGB. The Trustees will use their discretion when considering individual applications
  3. Has been selected for a development pathway for their chosen sport. The Trustees will use their discretion when considering individual applications

Operational Guidelines

All applications are considered at a meeting of the Trustees every three months. The following are the uses which a grant can be applied for:

  • Travelling expenses
  • Accommodation
  • Clothing
  • Equipment

Application Process

An application form is to be completed in full, stating relevant details and evidence of involvement in sport at a national level, including governing body endorsement. Please provide details of competitions entered over the last 12 months and any future competitions. A letter of endorsement from the coach (on letterheaded paper) would also be beneficial.

We all know about the cost-of-living crisis and the Trust is here to help. There are so many aspiring athletes in Torfaen, we would encourage anyone who is eligible for a grant to come forward; be it a first-time applicant or someone who has applied before.

The next meeting of the Trust to consider application forms is on 21 January 2026 with a deadline of 12 January 2026.

Application forms and further information can be found on the Council website or by emailing christine.philpott@torfaen.gov.uk.
